During National Volunteer Week – and all year long – we celebrate employees like Jordan Coons who go to great lengths to serve others. Their stories remind us that no act of kindness is ever wasted.

For Southwest Gas Senior IT Audit Manager Jordan Coons, volunteering is a family affair.

A 13-year veteran of Southwest Gas, Coons regularly volunteers alongside his wife and three children through the Company’s employee volunteer program BLUE - Building Lives Up Everywhere. Outside of work, he and his family look out for their neighbors, lending a helping hand when needed at their church and school. They also dedicate a week of vacation each year to volunteer for church youth trips.

“Volunteerism is essential as it enables us to contribute to the greater good of humanity. It fosters gratitude and empathy by connecting people with the diverse experiences of others,” said Coons. “Every opportunity to volunteer uplifts and energizes me, knowing that I'm making a positive impact on my community.”

Inspired by his own experiences, Coons sees volunteering as a powerful way to instill values – like selflessness, hard work, and compassion – in his children.  “Volunteering can teach children the impact of collective action and the importance of community, demonstrating how people from diverse backgrounds can come together to make a significant difference,” he said.

Their favorite volunteer event as a family? The Pack Shack event hosted by Southwest Gas at the former Company headquarters on Spring Mountain. Coons recalls the largest meeting room in the facility being transformed into a lively space for employees to unite for a good cause, preparing nutritious meals for those in need in Las Vegas. “It was a memorable and fulfilling experience for all of us. My kids especially enjoyed the ‘funnel party’ where they filled the meal packs through funnels and celebrated milestones by banging the gong,” said Coons.

For Coons, volunteering has provided countless opportunities for personal growth in his life and his children’s, providing a fun and rewarding experience that has strengthened their family bond while they work together to help others. He encourages anyone looking to make a difference to act now and proactively find ways to create a positive impact.

“Don't wait to be asked to serve—just jump in and join us. There are countless opportunities both with Southwest Gas and in the broader community,” he said. “Our world needs as many helping hands as possible. Take that first step and set an example for yourself, your family, friends, and most importantly, your children.”
