Stay Safe and Save: Southwest Gas Shares Summer Safety and Energy Saving Tips
LAS VEGAS, NV – As summer heats up and families prepare for Fourth of July celebrations, Southwest Gas is reminding customers to stay safe and save energy and enjoy the season with confidence.

As natural gas grills, firepits, and other outdoor appliances get increased use, Southwest Gas’ Contractor Referral Program can connect customers with licensed professionals for installation, inspections, or upgrades of outdoor natural gas systems. These contractors can assist with properly hooking up new or existing natural gas grills, inspect current appliances like grills, firepits or outdoor heaters for leaks and safety concerns and ensure outdoor, and indoor, appliances are compliant with safety codes.

Visit swgas.com/en/contractor-referrals to schedule a trusted service provider in your area.

With July Fourth around the corner, here are some safety tips to remember:

  • Keep fireworks away from any natural gas infrastructure, including meters.
  • Inspect gas connections to outdoor grills and firepits for holes, cracks, or leaks before use. Never use outdoor appliances indoors.
  • If you smell gas (rotten egg odor), hear hissing, or notice bubbling water/discolored vegetation, leave the area immediately and call 911 and Southwest Gas at 877-860-6020 .
Even though customers tend to use less gas in the summer, here are some tips to help them save even more energy.

  • Set water heaters to 120°F — hot enough for comfort but low enough to save energy.
  • Use less hot water by setting your clothes washer to wash with cold or cool water.
  • Limit pool and spa heating — only heat when necessary, especially in cooler areas.
  • When grilling on your natural gas grill, keep your grill lid closed to prevent heat from escaping.
  • When using your natural gas stovetop or oven, use the right-sized burner and pot for your cooking task, use pot lids to retain heat, and do not open oven doors unnecessarily.
  • There are tools and programs to help customers manage energy use and bills. Get more energy saving tips here and explore ways to manage their bills.
